- Production Steers must meet all requirements of the Junior Market Steer Project. Open to all steers exhibited by Curry County 4-H and FFA members that are current in Youth for the Quality Care of Animals . To be current, training must be completed within the current year.
- Steers must be owned and verified by being weighed in for an original weight in January/February. (Date will be determined by the 4-H Agents and FFA Advisors).
- All performance steers will be:
- Shown in one class and must be halter broken and clean groomed.
- Eligible to show in the Junior Market Steer Show.
- Required to be on the fairgrounds by 11:00 am on Monday, August 12. Steers will be scanned. Scan time TBA.
- Steers will not be required to be dry-lotted for a period of time. Steers will be calculated at an industry standard rate of 4% shrinkage rate.
- Weighed on the same date using the same set of scales for all weight measurements (no exceptions). Steers will be weighed twice to estimate ADG: 1) at designated required weigh in date and 2) at weigh in for the fair. Note: Superintendent reserves the right to refuse entry to any steer if it does not appear thrifty or has a dishonest fill.
- All steers will be scanned via real-time ultrasounds to estimate carcass characteristics at fairgrounds by a qualified ultrasound technician(s). (All steers scanned on the non-show side (left side of animal) parallel to and between the 12th and 13th rib and also perpendicular to the 12th and 13th ribs to estimate ribeye area, back fat, and intramuscular fat).
- Production steers will be judged for visual appraisal by a panel of 3 judges. (No Grooming Products allowed; steers will be shown clean and dry. Steers will be checked prior to entering the judging area).
- Production steers will be presented in a separate individual class prior to the Junior Market Steer Show and results will be announced on Friday during the sale meeting.
- Record Books and YQCA scores will be submitted to the Fair Office on Monday August 12 by 11:00a.m. Record books will be scored by a 2-3 person board. Record Book paperwork will be given to participants at the time of original weigh-in. Participants will be required to take the YQCA exam prior to the fair and information will be given to participants by July 1.
- Contestants are required to participate in all parts of the contest in order to be eligible for awards.
- Placing will be a combined index score including:
- Avg. Daily Gain35%
- Grid Carcass Value35%
- Visual Appraisal20%
- Record Book/YQCA Score 10%
- Placing will be the highest overall index score to lowest. Scores will be computed and verified by a three-person board. Overall Champion Curry County Production Steer will be the steer with the highest overall score.
- Ties will be broken in order on:
- Grid carcass value (Total dollar value; determined by ultrasound scan)
- Average Daily Gain
- Visual Appraisal
- Premium money and awards will be based on the number of entries and donations received.
